Atmospheric slow-burn horror

Dread that grows out of silence rather than a sudden loud noise.

For people who like to be frightened but hate being startled. These horror films build their fear slowly — out of empty rooms, fog, strange rituals and whatever the camera refuses to show. The list is limited to the horror genre with an IMDb floor of 6.5, and the search ranks films by atmosphere rather than body count.

Frequently asked

What does slow-burn horror mean?
A horror film that takes its time: for long stretches little happens on the surface while the unease keeps rising. The payoff tends to be quieter than a sudden shock, and it stays with you much longer.
Are there really no jump scares?
Very few horror films avoid them completely, but in these they are not the point — the fear lives in the atmosphere. If you want something eerie without real fright, start with the Beautiful but unsettling selection.
