Synopsis
In the early days of the war, ten-year-old Aigul, the daughter of a Soviet officer, loses her mother. The sick, tormented girl is hidden from the fascists by an old miller and his grandson Fedya. Before the children's eyes, the Germans kill their grandfather, suspecting him of having ties with partisans. The children are left alone. In search of partisans, the fascists conduct mass searches, and during one of them, they discover the Kazakh girl. She is threatened with deportation to Germany as an exotic souvenir - 'the Asian from Russia' for the German Folmer's wife. With the help of fellow villagers, Fedya manages to rescue Aigul. But the brave girl goes out to the Germans, as the order has been given to hang every sixth resident. And at the moment when the punishers were ready to triumph, the partisans surround the square.
