Synopsis

We are in 1950s America, the era of skyscrapers and the triumphant American dream. Mr. Baxter, a 'little office worker' in a major New York insurance company, regularly lends his apartment to his superiors, who use it as a love nest. In return, they promise him a promotion that never comes. Mr. Sheldrake, the big boss, notices the maneuver. He asks Baxter to lend him the apartment to take his mistress there, but he demands to be the only one to benefit from it. Sheldrake is a respectable husband and father, he needs discretion. Baxter agrees, he rises dramatically in rank. But when Baxter realizes that Sheldrake is bringing the woman he loves, Miss Novak, to the apartment, Baxter faces a dilemma: to give up his love or his career.
