Synopsis

The ceremonial center of Chavín de Huántar appears in present-day Peru about 3300 years ago. There, a class of priests rises as theocratic rulers. They represented the theater of the afterlife. They staged a complex liturgy, reinforcing their power before the pilgrims who came seeking answers. They used hallucinogenic substances and all kinds of sound, olfactory, and acoustic effects to manipulate the perceptions experienced by the neophytes. Everything was part of an elaborate strategy of persuasion. There, inequality and social imbalance were consolidated, allowing this caste of priests to place themselves at the top of the social pyramid, maintaining their authority for 800 years without the need for any army.
