Synopsis
During the Anti-Japanese War in Hebei's Baiyangdian, a mischievous and reckless boy named Zhang Ga witnesses his grandmother being killed by Japanese invaders while trying to help the Eighth Route Army escape. He goes to the county town alone to find the guerrilla squad leader Luo Jinbao to help him avenge his grandmother, but when he finally meets Luo Jinbao, he mistakes him for a traitor, leading to a misunderstanding. After the misunderstanding is cleared up, Zhang Ga dreams of becoming a little soldier of the Eighth Route Army and wants to have a gun. As a result, due to his eagerness to get a gun, he not only cheats during a bet with Pang Dun but also violates discipline by secretly hiding a real gun confiscated during a battle in a bird's nest in a tree, leading to another misunderstanding. Zhang Ga does not take the misunderstanding lightly and, confused, decides to go back to the county town with Pang Dun to avenge his grandmother. In the county town, Zhang Ga encounters the Japanese soldier Kuitian and the fat translator, and after a battle of wits, they gain nothing from Zhang Ga. After a series of experiences, Zhang Ga matures from a reckless troublemaker into a true scout of the Eighth Route Army.
